So today something new and exciting already happened! Apparently over night a juvenile raccoon accidentally fell into the red panda yard. This is considered dangerous for the pandas, so we therefore work to remove the animal as quickly as possible, with it having minimal contact with the pandas. Also, once it falls in it is unable to escape until we release it! Therefore, we had a stake out today, the other intern sat up by the exhibit all day with a two way radio waiting to alert the rest of us doing our normal daily routines if the raccoon moved or came down from the tree.
After some time of waiting, the raccoon finally came down, so we lured our pandas inside and locked them in so that they wouldn't escape, and we opened the doors to let the raccoon out. We were successful, but not without a scare first, he ran right for me! Hopefully the little guy learned his lesson and doesn't go into the panda exhibit again!
